Fleeting flashes of genius. Blips of brilliance. Dreams half-remembered. Ideas. Ideas. Ideas.
I should never underestimate how important a new idea could be – like in songwriting – I know it starts with a melodic idea and then a concept (hopefully) follows… an idea of how the song fits for me or for someone else.
Every song is unique. The more unique the idea, the stronger the song. I think great musicians know how to let the ideas flow and they know not to be too precious about them.
The idea is the most important thing for creativity but I need to have a lot of them, put them out there and play with them…work with them and then set them free.
I forget about them so I can have new ones.
These people/places have ideas that inspire me/madden me/keep me awake:

Hi – it’s late and I should be heading to bed but… I had a couple things on my mind…
I hear from people that the music business is hard. That it doesn’t pay. That it’s the wild west out there. All of this is true in some cases and you can spend all your breath blaming people and technology all over the place.
But I think the best way you can look at the music business right now is – you have nothing to lose.
If you’re an artist, songwriter, producer…whatever – you can’t hold back at all. You have to just be your best musical self, be honest, be a badass, work hard and expect almost nothing in return except your own satisfaction.
Because no one really knows what the hell is going on, no one is holding the reins except you – the creator. Just make great music. Work your butt off and make it great. You’ve got nothing to lose.
Here are some writers and performers that keep me going when the going gets tougher:

Hey there! I’m about 75% done with the recording for “all our hands in the air”…and I’m very excited. As you know – I’m releasing one song a month leading up to the official release in June.
This month’s song is still getting mixed so it is LATE! And I apologize for that. You can still get last month’s song, “SAY YOU WILL” here now if you put in your email address in the box to the right.
As I’ve been recording and planning the release, setting up the kickstarter page to fund the final stages and tweaking everything… I’ve been thinking a lot about the shifting business of music and how we songwriters, composers and musicians are navigating it. It’s a constant adjustment every day. It can feel crazy with all the options out there.
Right now I’m looking at the next stage in the process – the design element. I have a designer that I love who is going to work on the cover with me. And the possiblites are endless. I’ve been looking at TONS of record covers for inspiration. Man, there are so many amazing ones. Here are some of my favorites…
Hey there!
